I would go with the A3000  16/50 14MB ram (040 Accel., Picasso II,
Doubletalk)-accel and GFX card are a big plus and second the A3000 25/50
18MB ram (VLAB), I do a lot of video stuff
and would need the VLAB. I paid about $300 for my second A3000 16/030. Wh=
at
sound card is in the A3000T? could you upgrade the bridgeboards processor=

(removable)?

In your CGI-scripts (Or whatever you use), save out the IP_ADDR field (I'm
sure it's something like that, I haven't done PERL programming in a LONG
time!)

Is this a stack related problem, or merely a bug in MD2?  And does anyone
fancy editing the executable with a hex editor to fix it?   ;-)

It's not essential. It lets the programmer spend more time on his
program, rather than worry about little details like font sizes,
screen modes, colour depth, border sizes, IDCMP messages, window

activation flags, gadget updates, proportional quantities, embedded
images ... need I go on? With MUI, all of these details are

contains a set of horizontal or veritcal rectangular groups. Each
group contains one or more gadgets or even more sub-groups (like a

After this, you setup the notification details of your gadgets and MUI
will do the rest for you.

Of course it can be done, just expect updates of that program to be
slower when the programmer adds a few extra tick boxes or buttons to
his user interface.

Getting the GUI to look "nice" is a lot harder than it sounds. It's a
tedious process that MUI removes.

Royalties for Amiga programs these days aren't what they used to be,
so most Amiga programmers will look for as many shortcuts as possible,
when it comes to writing complex programs.

Would you rather paint your room's ceiling with a toothbrush or a
roller? :)

Same goes for libraries, devices and all software in general. Anybody

software. This doesn't make the OS badly organised.

I=B4m insisting on this, because I think it should be known, maybe more
people will buy PPC.

About two weeks or so I wrotte an e-mail to various main persons in the
Amiga exposing my concerns about a problem that happened to me and that
could happend to anyone. It was mainly about buying new hardware,
specifically PPC hardware,  but software too. I expressed the problem
that if I buy a PPC accelerator I, most likely, like Fleecy Moss said
in an interview, won=B4t be able to run the new upcaming Amiga OS, and in
 that interview it was also said that if I buy an IBM powerPC
motherboard I will, most likely be able to run the new OS. So I=B4d be
wasting money in a PPC accelerator, while I could be buying for more or
less the same price, hardware that was prepared for the new Amiga. This
is quite serious and I sopose many have thought about it. The answer
came from Fleecy Moss himself, and I haven=B4t posted it yet, because I
didn=B4t knew if I was sopposed to do that. I asked but got no answer, so
since in my e-mail I said it was something that could affect us all, I
now consider it is of course to share with other persons that can have
that problem. I=B4m sorry you guys if I sometimes post and just disapear,
but I=B4m in a computer room in the University of the Algarve and can=B4t
do all I want.

We will do our best to support emulation of the PPC hybrids,
  so SW bought for PPC boards should still work on the
  classic emulator. There is no reason not to buy SW for PPC
  boards.

  For the HW, we are talking to a few companies about the potential
  for creating a motherboard which can take the PPC cards and then
  come up as a standard PPC machine, on which the new Amiga will run.

I think there is not much we can do really.
And think what will happen we the new OS cames out! Because in the PC
piracy is even  worst. I wonder how windows is still alive!(:)) They
sell it originally with the computer, but I don=B4t thing many will buy
theh new OS originally, but you can bet many will try to pirate it. I
don=B4t know one PC owner that doesn=B4t pirate. If they at Amiga don=B4t
came across a way to avoid that, we=B4re dead at the moment we reborn!

Common Sense is whats needed here,.. for example all the stuff on my
website is copyright to me (its my work), and any copying of it is
illigal, however i could prosecute everybody who views my site because
they take several copys when they do so.

- proxy cache,.. 1st copy
- browser cache,.. 2nd copy
- main memory cache,.. 3rd copy
- graphcs memory,.. 4th copy

- etc,..

This plainly breaks my copyright on the info stored on my web page, i
could sue for visiting my website !!

That is, you should use the "REMOTE_ADDR" environment variable for the IP
address of the client.  "REMOTE_HOST" will give the client machine's name,
if the web server can get it...

Once you've decided that it's a particular IP or range of IP addresses,
you could have the script refuse requests immediately when the address
matches, if you like.

Don't I feel small! Mind you, in my defense, I must say that I always set
IP_ADDR to REMOTE_HOST in my CGI scripts...

Hi you lot,

I have a couple of complaints about OS3.5. Isn't there a ML for OS3.5
somewhere? I can't find it, so I'll moan here instead.

- The Snapshot menu item does not recreate a deleted icon any more.
This was a handy little feature at times.

- The icon box in the Icon Information window does not accept directory
icons (when you drag an icon in to copy its imagery).

- Who are Marpet Developments? The OS3.5 version of ShowConfig thinks
my Apollo RAM expansion board is made by Marpet Developments. Other,
third-party (PD etc), ShowConfig replacements know it's an Apollo. Is
there a Marpet/Apollo connection or is it a mistake?


I also have a couple of other problems/complaints:

- Trying to access any menus on the WB screen when the Format command
is just beginning to format a floppy disk crashes the machine. It just
seizes up completely with the floppy drive light on. Would this be
anything to do with me running ToolsDaemon? I mean any menu access
causes a crash, not just the ToolsDaemon added menus.

- A slight moan this time: word wrap should be /optional/ in EditPad,
because it's confusing otherwise when you edit scripts with long lines,
e.g. a startup-sequence with a mile-long PATH command. That's my
opinion anyway.


And a completely unrelated problem: the /Ordering/ directory utility
has a Y2K bug - it shows the year "00" as ":0" in the file listing
windows. I haven't found an update. Although I could e-mail the author.
If he's still updating it. Yes, I'll mail him.

Is anyone else experiencing the OS3.5 problems, or is it just some
peculiarity of my setup? Any ideas, anyone? Please?

Look Phase 5 went down the Pan last week.

It comes as no surprise, after all, they stopped production of their
PPC 603 & 604 & Bvision range to concentrate on their new G4 cards.

The problem was that they had no income coming in to keep them going.

If they had continued to make the older cards they would still be in
Business.

Ask any Amiga Hardware retailer about their back orders and they'll
weep.

I have heard (from a good source) that in this country alone the total
sum of back orders for the existing kit amounted to =A3100,000 pounds.
More than enough to have kept them going.

Basically they did a Commodore - Inept management.

hey

My pcmcia port on my a1200 has a bent pin and a broken port guide. Is
there anyway i can fix this without paying for an expensive repair.
Also does the 1d4 motherboard work with blizzard ppc cards without
fixes and with clock cards. If it does need a fix is there a diy way to
do so i don't have to pay something like thirty pounds to get it fixed.
Finally will blizzard ppc cards work in the original case of the a1200
or does it need to be in a tower.

So do I. What we have to do is convince DCE that there is enough demand
for them, you know 500 people want one, or maybe 1000. I believe there
was enough demand when Phase 5 produced them. According to a Mac Shop a
G4 400 is supposed to be the equivalent of a PIII 900...

Rubbish. In terms of integer performance, the Intel will blow the G4
away. Probably FPU stuff, too. Stuff that's optimised for the Altivec unit
stands a better chance, but for most general-purpose work the PIII will be
significantly faster.

I don't think they went bankrupt because of 100,000, besides it is
100,000 minus production costs and minus the time their lines
could not produce mac boards... And I don't think they went bankrupt
because of not producing Amiga cards, they made their money in the
Macintosh market, and unfortunately for them
their cards had not the best reputationlately.

This is in response to Jonathan Day's recent posting regarding "What's
on AF135"

I have already replied to this posting separately but Jonathan's question
sparked some inner emotion and although most of you won't be interested I
thought that I'd take this opportunity to voice my opinions on the Amiga
market. I'm fully expecting to be flamed for this but, in all honesty, I
don't care since these are my thoughts and I stand by them...

Without a doubt, the single most important reason for the decline of the
Amiga is the end user and his seemingly stubborn reluctance to spend any
bloody money on software. The Amiga needs software developers to survive
and the developers need money to survive, the magazines need advertisers
to survive and the advertisers need to sell products to survive. Is there
a pattern emerging here?

Most of the "big gun" developers have already abandoned the Amiga and the
remaining few are now leaving on an seemingly daily basis. Gold Disk,
ASDG, Electronic Arts, Scala, Aegis/Oxxi, Digita, Impulse, Softwood
(to name a few) where responsible for bringing us some of the best
software available on any computer and where are they now? Most of them
are now developing their software for the PC and Mac platforms.

Many of you will probably argue that this migration would probably have
happened anyway and, to an extent, this is probably true. But you have to
ask yourself "would it have happened so easily if I had actually bought
their software?"

A few years ago I sold the distribution rights for the EMC Phase 1 and 2
CDs to Future Publishing. This allowed Amiga Format to "give them away"
with the magazine. I thought long and hard prior to signing the dotted
line and my major concern at the time was that this would potentially
kill any future sales of the Phase 1 and 2 CDs. I made the right choice!
because the Amiga software market was already on the decline.

As part of the distribution deal, Future heavily promoted the availability
of Phase 3 (which had already received brilliant reviews in all the Amiga
magazines) at a heavily reduced price. At the same time it was made clear
that the EMC Phase 1, 2 and 3 CDs were designed as a complete set and that
EMC Phase 3 would not be given away by Amiga Format so, the only way anybody
already having Phase 1 and 2 could get Phase 3 was to order it direct from
EMC. In theory, it was a great idea, in practise we managed to scrape
together around 40 sales from the promotion, hardly inspiring.

To add insult to injury Amiga Format received a steady stream of letters
from readers asking when Phase3 was to be given away free! We in turn,
received a steady stream of phone calls asking when we were giving Phase3
to Amiga Format. In one particular case, Amiga Format received about 10
letters from the same reader asking when they were putting Phase 3 on the
cover. Although this isn't entirely relevent to the subject at hand I
hope it illustrates the attitude that some Amiga users have.

I have been lurking on the afb since it's inception and one thing that
has surprised me is the amount of whinging; the price of "X" software,
how many pages AF has, the fact that some demo software is restricted
and so on... and for those of you that are guilty of this I have a few
things to say:

1. "X" software would cost more than double on a PC and you would need
   to buy a new hard drive just to install it.
2. AF could afford more pages if more people advertised, and more
   advertisers would advertise if you bought thier products.
3. If you bought full versions of the demo software...


Perhaps the best illustration of the "I don't want to spend any money
on Amiga software" attitute are some of the replies to the "Guess what's
on AF135?" posting... just look at the level of response to that one.
Give something away for free and just look at the interest it provokes!!!

One of you even stated that he was worried in case he went out and bought
"135 Freebie" and then found it appearing on AF for free!

Sigh... I rest my case.

What is the email way of clapping?

Errol has summed up the Amiga software market brilliantly. Fortunately, it
would appear that he doesn't make money from the Amiga market (who does
these days!), but his comments on how Amiga users view "buying" a product is
correct.

If you can get a pirate then so what?

That started with the A500 and playground piracy, but once people had the
idea that s/w could be obtained from a mate, they always think that way.
Most have since moved from the Amiga to the PC - and they still do the same
- someone in their office gets the Tango, Blobby or Arctic CDs and copies
them for everyone.

Problem is, the Amiga market is still seen that way - that's why we have
lots of hardware development and not much software development.
Sad innit :(

A bug, probably related to the one that causes MD-II to abort a mail
download if it finds a mail with corrupt or illegal headers.

It does suck big time, doesn't it?  I know I've been on about it almost as
much as everyone else, but I'm genuinely interested in what the freebie is,
even though I probably already own it!  :-)

I think it's good to hear the point of view of a developer as well as end
users.

BTW if it sparks any real interest, I might be willing to offer
some "prizes" for another spending frenzy next month.  Maybe the only way
to get people buying stuff is to offer them the chance of a freebie!  :-/

We're only a small market, and Cutbacks have hit the smallest computer
system... You guessed it...

Yes! See the point above. Why should a developer sell a product for =
=A355 when
they can sell 20x the number of units at 10x the price?

Agreed.

Mainly because we've gotten used to distributors selling the stuff to =
CD's
at an extremely reduced rate and leaving the Amiga market (Look at =
Softwood,
Scala, Gold Disk etc...)

Given that phase 5 have gone bust (yes, I've known since

waiting for repair with phase5?

It was sent to them months ago.  However, I don't expect it
has been repaired, more likely just lying somewhere.
Aaargh... I really am quite annoyed.  What is likely to
happen?  Can I get any money back from anywhere?

Which is why they should have concentrated on the Amiga Market more.

I am aware that they have to deduct their costs from the actual
=A3100,000 in the UK.

Remember, that 100,000 figure is the estimated amount for the UK only.
Add the rest of the world to that (Let's face it, the German Amiga
market is much bigger than the UK. (add US, Canada, rest of Europe and
Australia) and I bet you it comes to a damn sight more than =A3100,000.

Now you have a huge backlog of orders for the Amiga. The more you
produce, the lower your costs. So in the end if they had switched
production to the Amiga, they would not have gone bankrupt. Kapish?

You just have to be *very* careful...

It worked in mine for ages before I swapped the motherboard for a 1b.
However, thats not to say it'll work in yours; every Amiga has a
different spirit. Adding further expansion my prove a problem, what

Yes, but make sure there is a). a bigger PSU connected to your 1200,
and b). there is plenty of airflow. Since you seem a DIY guy, you can
find PSU alterations on Aminet. Better airflow can be achieved by
raising the A1200 by putting 'feet' on each corner, plus a chuffing
great fan instead of the small one on the PPC board.

Care to lend me 40 odd quid toward the cost of OS3.5, 3.1 ROMs, Boing
Bag.. oh and a new hd so I have somewhere to put it all? =)

Anyway, I'm used to worse. The origional 4 col icon are invisble! with
8bit screens they're completely invisible, with 7bit they're marginally
visble etc. Its something to do with background images with lots of
colours, and newicons transparent icon option (It just seems to take the
option a little too literaly with the old icons =)

Was it sent back through another firm or directly to Phase 5.If the latter
then you should have phoned them first and got a repair number.Which you
quote when making enquiries about your card.Try phoning them direct,they
must have a contact number.

I think when a document is placed on the WWW, it is implied that it is
for public consuption.  The very nature of the WWW means that whatever
content exists is there not just to be viewed but specifically designed
to be viewed by anyone with access to it (unless it is password
protected) and it would be naive to place a document on the web without
understanding the risks of somebody stumbling across it.  It becomes
illegal if I then, having downloaded, recycle code, graphics or content
to meet my own grubby little ends :-)

Also, if I get your address and type it in my browser, how am I supposed
to know that what I am downloading is copyright until I see it?

internal video slot, so it's only any good for an A2000 (A1500) or A4000,=

but hasn't enough memory to display a full PAL Hires laced screen mode.

I'm still not convinced... If we can come up with this ingenious plan,
surely they could, too? (Then again, that's perhaps the definition of
mismanagement ;)

As the German Benutzerhandbuch(see thats German that is!)says it is from
3state and
called the MultiVision 500/2000 card.

It seems that according to one of the polls on the site, 56.3% of you are
using OS3.5! Those guys obviously like the new OS3.5-style icons. If you
don't think that 56.3% of all Amiga users are using the current OS, and you

Yeah it has a Audio Amplifier on it with two outputs for speakers (2.1 Watt
at 8 Ohms)that will certainly make you deaf.As you said not alot of memory

I'm using a 1d4 with a BlizzardPPC but this whole revision/fix thing seems
to vary.  For example my old 2B mb is useless with an Apollo 1240/40 but my
mates 2B works fine with it.  Neither have been fixed since purchase.  Also
the clockport on my 2B has 40 pins his has 22.
As for using a desktop case...I would strongly dissuade you from doing so.
You're going to struggle with power (you could buy a better PSU) and it's
going to get very HOT in there.

Changing the subject slightly, does anyone know if it's possible to use a
PocketLAN (it's a NIC that connects to the parallel port and has a BNC
connector on it) on an Amiga?  I suspect it's merely a case of needing
suitable software, but does that software exist (an admittedly brief search
of Aminet didn't help)?

Not really, I'd much rather have typed something about when it will be
available and who will offer it. There will be an option for the "free"
ISPs, with a slightly lower call charge than at present. You'll have the
choice of pay-per-minute or flat rate access.

Another issue that hasn't been addresses publicly is that of ISPs who
use other telcos for their main dialin lines. Since this is just about
everyone but BT and their resellers, it is a very important issue.

British Telecom *is* a global company! Besides which it's much easier just
to type "bt" in your browser, than having to type "www.bt.co.uk".
